What We're Following This Morning

The Republican meltdown: As David noted about last night’s presidential debate, the GOP “appears on the edge of collapse, and the raucous exchange in Detroit did nothing to erase that impression.”

It’s time for the monthly jobs report: Economists surveyed by Reuters expect that 191,000 were added last month, and that the unemployment rate remained at 4.9 percent. Last month, employers added 151,000 jobs. The data will be released at 8:30 a.m. ET. Update: Employers added 242,000 jobs; the jobless rate stayed the same. You can read the full report here—and Bourree’s reporting on it here.

Convictions over Alan Kurdi’s death: Two Syrian people-smugglers have each been sentenced to four years and two months in prison over the death of the Syrian boy and four others. The image of Kurdi’s lifeless body on a Turkish beach last September drew the world’s attention—at least temporarily—to the Syrian refugee crisis. Update: More here
