The Daredevil Ingenuity of the All-American Soap Box Derby

By Kasia Cieplak-Mayr von Baldegg

This documentary about the national soap box derby of 1936 in Akron, Ohio, was sponsored by an assortment of newspapers and General Motors. Courtesy of the Prelinger Archive, this excerpt from the ten minute film focuses on the main event -- the finalists face off in their homemade cars before a crowd of hundreds, accompanied by enthusiastic, super patriotic narration.
