Falling for Anything

The TSA chief justifies massaging your unmentionables:

Security officials said the new procedures were the only way to detect explosives hidden under clothing. "We cannot forget that less than one year ago a suicide bomber with explosives in his underwear tried to bring down a plane over Detroit," Mr. Pistole said.

It's worth remembering that the goal of the terrorist is to terrorize, and from that perspective, they've been really successful. The terrorist would like to kill a lot of people, but exposing American strength as thin boasting will do in a pinch.

I wonder how effective the TSA really are, and whether this is really just a matter of political cover. We almost certainly will be hit again. In reference to airport security, I'm sure any president wants to be able to say, "We tried everything."
