Matt Drudge's Hurricane Fixation

By Joshua Green

Hurricane season is upon us, and that means blaring, all-caps 72-point headlines from Matt Drudge, who is obsessed with them. I am, too. And I've always found Drudge's alarmist headlines enjoyable, in the same way that whacked-out New York Post headlines are enjoyable. One of his best is "KILLSTORM."

So far, though, with Hurricane Earl bearing down on the Gulf Coast East Coast, he's going with the disappointingly lame, "EARL EYES OUTER BANKS." Maybe he's building up to something. In any event, it got me thinking. Awhile back, I'd did a contest for the Best Newsweek Cover Line, riffing on the magazine's tendency to obsess about Jesus and pop culture (Ex: "Jesus: Was He Gay? The New Science"). Maybe it's time for a Best Drudge Hurricane Headline contest, because--well, it's Tuesday. I'll keep an on eye on Drudge, too, since he's pretty much Yoda here.

To get things started, how about "ROTATING DEATH"? Or maybe "THE EARL OF DESTRUCTION." Think you can you top that? Email me, and I'll post the best ones.
