We generally associate castles with medieval royalty—but this week The Atlantic and Atlas Obscura present a few offbeat palaces that go beyond moats, drawbridges, and pretty pretty princesses. Featured in this edition of "7 Wonders of the World":

  • A one-time health resort used by aristocrats around the world, now a major tourist attraction
  • A castle made of beer cans and other refuse
  • A California castle allegedly haunted by a former housekeeper
  • The largest castle in the U.S. built and lived in by a single person (a.k.a. a "self-built castle")
  • A self-built castle held together with mortar, cement, and goat's milk
  • A Hungarian self-built castle
  • A 13th-century castle covered in a gigantic graffiti mural
