Editor's Note: From F. Scott Fitzgerald to Charles Bukowski to Ernest Hemingway, many of our most accomplished authors have also struggled with addiction and alcoholism. Some of those mentioned in this list of 15 of the best (that is, those who created celebrated works despite -- or because of -- their problems) have treated their addictions -- to heroin, to alcohol, to cigarettes, to marijuana, to painkillers -- as subjects in their stories. Others kept them hidden for decades. Whether they decided to go public or not, all of these authors, through their work and their celebrity, have influenced our thinking on addiction and recovery.
