Track of the Day: 'Closer'

Tegan and Sara have been most known for their six albums of earnest indie folk and rock tunes delivered over the last decade. The Calgary natives have achieved many things—touring with everyone from The Pretenders to Ryan Adams, signing to Neil Young's record label—but crossover pop success has never seemed to be on the agenda, until now. Heartthrob, which came out at the end of January, is essentially 10 hit songs in one tidy package. This particular cut was produced and co-written with Greg Kurstin, known for his work with Pink, Kelly Clarkson, and Foster the People. It's a soaring distillation of the fizzy emotions that accompany the first moments of infatuation, in an adult tone. It swoons, shouts, gets a bit saucy, and has one of the best sing-along choruses you'll hear all year.
