Track of the Day: 'Empire'

Alpines are back, with a great new track titled "Empire," which may or may not be the smartest title to be used by a London-based band in 2012. Leaving that issue aside, this song shows they are on their way to success. I mean, with the production values on this video, and the aggressive wardrobe choices, you'd have to believe they have the support of their label. And why not? Singer Catherine Pockson still dominates the foreground, with a soaring vocal that could fill Royal Albert Hall, and fingernails that probably require some sort of license. And her bandmate, Bob Matthews is in the background, sweeping from drum to drum with an almost Scandinavian cool. Like former Track of the Day "Cocoon," this cut feels like a refreshing blast of classic, smart-set synthpop, after one-too-many glasses of chillwave and brostep.
