A Mind-Bending Showdown Between Ego and Id in a Crumbling Sanatorium

By Kasia Cieplak-Mayr von Baldegg

Alter Ego, an experimental short by Rusch Meyer, a Berlin-based filmmaker, blends gorgeous cinematography with a rich soundscape by Radium Audio. J├Ârdis Richter's performance is both graceful and freakishly reptilian -- a little like Marvel's X-Men character, Mystique. Make sure to watch full screen in HD to appreciate the visual textures of the abandoned building, which Meyer discovered while location scouting.

He describes the inspiration for the piece on his Vimeo page:

I could sense the history of the place as I walked around -- so many stories of disease, death, but also of hope and recovery. I started to imagine the different mental states inside a person who might have worked or been a patient here. The idea for the film grew from these thoughts, a journey between the subconscious and the superego!
