How the 'Spielberg Face' Makes Everything Look Awesome

By Kasia Cieplak-Mayr von Baldegg

Spielberg is a master of Hollywood blockbuster magic. Dinosaurs, aliens, robots, apocalypse, etc, all rendered with glorious special effects, have made for one megahit after another. There's a secret ingredient in the mix, however -- a sort of cinematic M.S.G. that kicks it up a notch: the Spielberg Face. You know, the face you made when you saw those aliens? This epic video essay is here to expose just how often that speechless expression of wonder appears in the filmmaker's work, where it comes from, and what it says about us.

Written and edited by Kevin B. Lee for Fandor, the video was inspired by Matt Patches's roundup of Spielberg faces for UGO. The full transcript of the video and a list of the films referenced can be found here.
