Track of the Day: 'A Funny Thing'

By Brendan Hasenstab

Past TracksPenguin Prison has released its debut album, and if you remember their previous track-of-the-day appearance, you know you're in for a funky, syncopated treat. This is pop indebted to the multi-platinum sounds of Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson, and not many folks make records that sound like this today. But the formula is still potent, even though it was concocted more than 30 years ago. Main man Chris Glover knows his way around a groove, and this particular cut has a basic, almost Krautrock rhythm for the verses, and a chopped-up, Technicolor synthscape under the chorus. The narrative has eluded me, because it seems to be pieces of several stories woven together more for sound rather than meaning. But when the finished product sounds this good, I don't really care.
