Meet the Death-Metal Voice of 'The Thing' and 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn'

By Daniel D. Snyder

If you've ever wondered how Hollywood producers create the inhuman sounds behind their on-screen monsters, here's an answer, at least regarding the 2011 incarnation of The Thing. Makers of the new horror prequel tapped Dylan Hromadka, vocalist for California death-metal troupe Resurrecting Judas to be the voice of their shape-shifting alien.

Hromadka, who has also contributed werewolf growls to the upcoming Twilight installment, got the gig through his father, a popular Hollywood sound artist. Decibel magazine tracked Hromadka down to ask about the challenges of voicing, among other things, The Thing:

"I did a bunch of different stuff," Hromadka says. "I did inhale screams, exhale screams. Low screams. High screams. Really drawn out long screams. I did screams where I held my neck and basically choked myself to make really crazy noises...Some of my roars are behind other noises, too, like flame-throwers."

Really? You voiced a flame-thrower?

"Yeah, sound editors tend to mix other brutal sounds in behind fire and explosions...By the time I was done, I felt like my throat was bleeding."
