Randy Moss Retired

By Ta-Nehisi Coates

From a fan's perspective, it's good to know that Moss will no longer be terrorizing the Cowboys--something he took particular delight in. I don't think, in Moss's whole time in the league, we had a cornerback who even belonged on the field with him. Moss was not the greatest reciever I've ever seen (the incomparable Jerry Rice, no doubt) but he was the most talentedĀ receiverĀ I've ever seen.

But from a deeply human perspective, these days, I am never sad to hear that a pro football player is retiring. (I'm actually a little sad to see Tiki Barber coming back.) As I've said repeatedly, I'm having a really hard time reconciling my love for the game, with the long-term results of the game. Coupling that with entertainment Leviathan that is now football, it's increasingly hard for me to get into.

A big hit just doesn't excite me like it used to. But I'm not out yet. Still working my way through.
