Track of the Day: 'Experimenting With Rugs'

By Brendan Hasenstab

Past Tracks Florrie is back with a fresh new EP, Experiments, featuring six new slices of UK pop done right. The lead-off single is this curiously named track. Not sure what the metaphor is expressing, but quite obviously, the track is about the closing chapter of a romance. It gets right down to business with these opening lines: "My heart/Isn't big enough/No more/And I start to wonder what I saw/In you."

Between the verses, the keyboards and drums drop away, revealing a reverb-dusted, baritone guitar line that might remind you of one Peter Hook. It's elegant, and there for two measures before the other layers jump back into action, ramping up ahead of the chorus.

Poor guy doesn't know the roundhouse punch is coming, because Florrie hasn't thrown it yet. But the hour grows near.
