Track of the Day: 'Sirens'

By Brendan Hasenstab

Past Tracks

In this clip, Starlings singer Justin Robson does psychic battle with an attractive blonde siren in a bright-red party dress--although young Justin is in the wrong line of business if he's afraid of attracting sirens. In any case, he prevails, and we listeners are treated to a propulsive slice of dance rock in the mold of classic Duran Duran. Produced for the Sheffield, England quartet by rave kingpin Richard Norris, the song has all of the Balearic style of Starlings' debut single (and former track of the day), "Weight in Gold."

Must give a tip of the cap to Civil Music and that label's partner Topspin Media for making this track (and a whole slew of nice remixes) available in a rainbow of formats right from the band's website. No need to battle the usual gap between UK and U.S. release dates; no need to wait for iTunes to wake up to this group. This is the way all labels should be operating in 2011.
