Mindy Kaling—actress and writer for The Office—released the first few chapters of her upcoming book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, today. The 27-page excerpt includes fashion tips for men, musings on why anyone has one-night stands, and a Tina Fey-esque rant against cupcakes. The most the practical part is probably her essay on how to approach high school. Her advice boils down to this:
I just want ambitious teenagers to know it is totally fine to be quiet, observant kids. Besides being a delight to your parents, youwill find you have plenty of time later to catch up. So many people work with—famous actors, accomplished writers—were overlooked in high school. Be like Allan Pearl. Sit next to the class clown and study him. Then grow up, take everything you learn, and get paid to be a real-life clown, unlike whatever unexciting thing the actual high school class clown is doing now. I think our class clown is doing marketing in Warwick, Connecticut.
Too bad most of her readers are probably way past their teenage years.
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? comes out in November.
