I think a bigger problem than either that you mention is the television treatment of the police and the drug war. On TV, professional courtesy is rarely mentioned. In reality, cops who don't follow the rules of professional courtesy are often punished harsher than ones that have infringed on citizens' rights. The entire television universe has created what amounts to a diffused cult of authority worship. On TV almost every cop is awesome. I think this can create the "unseen" cases where a real life jury or grand jury automatically believes the authority figure (police) and assumes that the defendant must be guilty or else why are they there?
