Now, if that wasn't enough to turn you green with envy, the fact that they returned to dry land and wrote an album of songs about the joys of that ocean adventure just might. Especially since it has generated positive buzz and a tour that saw them headlining a show at New York's Bowery Ballroom in early March.
Despite all of this, and all the suspect choices I have apparently made in life, I have to admit I love their sound. It's steeped in the reverb-laden end of retro rock, and the girl-group vocal styles of the 1960s. But with modern punch, warmth, and a good dollop of young love.
In terms of reference points, Tennis aren't as loud as Best Coast, but not as moody as the XX. This particular track, "Cape Dory," is a straightforward ode to the romance of sailing after dark. May require a bit of imagination for most listeners (me included), but I hope we all will have the pleasure someday.
