Michael Vick

By Ta-Nehisi Coates

It's getting really hard to believe that there is no racial element in the shots this dude is taking. People literally calling for his death on national TV. Others hoping he's injured on the field. Still others using him and Desean Jackson (??) as a stand-in for overpaid, craven players. (I don't buy the "Cowboys fan" excuse.) The cocktail of moral outrage and twisted logic served up by these people is nauseating:

"Hunting is a sport," Buehrle said. "There are hunting stores out there. If that's illegal, shame on my dad and my grandpa and his grandpa. It's kind of been brought up throughout the history of America. The last time I knew dog fighting was a sport was never."

I really try to avoid these "If he were white" hypotheticals. But it's really hard for me to believe that in the unlikely instance that Ben Rothlisberger had been tried, convicted, come out and apologized, he would be getting this kind of treatment. I just don't believe that Tucker Carlson would be on television calling for him to be killed. And then, backtracking by comparing him to a child-molester.
