Track of the Day: 'Racing to Shimmering Lights'

By Stephen Cooke

Past TracksI feel like an infant with a new mobile over its crib, mesmerized by the stained glass colours and rock candy sounds of Meligrove Band's "Racing to Shimmering Lights" clip. The quartet gleefully descends into madness, propelled by a strident beat, bargain store keyboard and a fuzz bass that threatens to enter my spine and unleash it from my ribcage.

The band even brings in a chorus of childlike voices as the song progresses, perhaps as further comment on a generation's increasingly deficient attention span, with multiple distractions coming from every which way. But the track's own ADD is what keeps me hitting replay, as different segments bring new arrangements of sounds without losing the lurching forward momentum.

The end result is quite dazzling.
