Track of the Day: 'Preseli (Entrepreneurs Neuromancer Remix)'

By Alex Eichler

Past TracksIn May of this year, Lawrence Lek, a London producer and visual artist who records as Radiant Dragon, released a droney, dreamy single called "Preseli." The song is an oddly comforting slice of glitch-pop, all sighed vocals and mellow keyboard washes. I've never flown through the clouds like Peter Pan, but if I could, and if I were allowed to bring an iPod, "Preseli" might be the song I'd cue up.

Around the same time that Radiant Dragon released "Preseli," another London producer--Adam Crisp, who works under the name Entrepreneurs--put out a remix of it. If Lek's song is like flying through night skies, Crisp's remix is like stumbling around lost in a haunted house. Gone are the soothing chords and playful beats. Instead, the music hums and sputters like a flickering bulb, and voices show up out of nowhere to murmur in your ear. There are stretches where nothing that you would call "music" even happens; it's just bits of white noise scurrying past each other.

Lek's original is a prettier song, but Crisp's take on it is genuinely unsettling, which strikes me as the more tricky feat. I've heard plenty of pop songs that get me excited and plenty that make me sad and plenty that make me grateful to be alive on this planet, but Crisp's remix is one of the few that actually, actively creeps me out.
