'A Sip or a Spoonful Won't Do'

By Ta-Nehisi Coates

[Shani O. Hilton]

You guys, I love this song by M. Ward. I can't even tell you exactly why, although I have some theories. Maybe it's the slow build and insistent beat. Or the stuttering way it starts: "One...one...one or two won't do..." Or maybe it's this moment when it goes from a few strums to a full-on rock song:

She said if love
If love is a poison cup
Then drink it up
Cuz a sip
A sip
A sip or a spoonful won't do
Won't do nothin' for you
But mess you up

Anyway. I was listening to it last night on repeat and resolved to share it with you. (Sorry, you can't really see what's going on in this video, but seeing isn't the point, is it?) You can also hear the studio version on Ward's Myspace page.

As an aside, this song is probably the only good thing I got out of the 3rd season of Veronica Mars...
