We've covered the Twilight phenomenon at The Atlantic, both online and in the magazine. Alyssa Rosenberg used last fall's release of the second film, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, to condemn the series:
It's hard to imagine how even the most obsessive devotee of all-consuming love stories could be thoroughly absorbed by this saga. But in an earlier magazine piece, Caitlin Flanagan raved about the books that the film series inspired:
Twilight is fantastic. It's a page-turner that pops out a lurching, frightening ending I never saw coming. It's also the first book that seemed at long last to rekindle something of the girl-reader in me.
But the "Twihards" that helped make the last two films bring in hundreds of millions of dollars in ticket sales don't care much what any writer thinks—they're already gushing about the new trailer, both on fan sites and on Twitter.
