Track of the Day: 'The Warpath'

Past Tracks

There seems to be a notion floating around that if you want to sound like Bon Iver, you've got to look like him. Perhaps the best cure for that misconception is the Dallas-born singer-songwriter Conner Youngblood. Refreshingly, the photo on his Soundcloud page shows a muscle-bound, jersey-sporting, newly minted Yale grad. (He seems to have done a little wrestling in college, too, in whatever downtime was left over between performing at big-name festivals like South by Southwest and recording two studio albums.)

"The Warpath" manages to stay quiet on the decibel scale without ever sounding subdued. Delicate, silken strains of melody swell and dissolve under Youngblood's melancholy falsetto—interrupted every so often by jaunty whistling and snare drum rolls. The effect is that of a Civil War-era typhoid fever dream.
