Track of the Day: 'Yesterday'

More

Past Tracks Cory Branan is one of the hotter properties in the Americana genre these days. His voice can go from clean and bright to tar-paper shack and back, in almost no time. On his excellent new album, Mutt, the styles range from singer-songwriter to Southern punk, with the occasional detour into Tom Waits territory. This track happens to fall into the heartland-rock category, and as you'll hear, it has is a solid debt to Indiana's pride and joy, John Mellencamp. My personal favorite moment comes roughly 2:30 in, when the song slows down and Branan sings, "The easy way / We used to play / When there was no such thing / As yesterday / We threw our two hearts high / The first half felt like / FLYYYYYYYYYYYIN'" That perfectly captures the lightning-in-a-bottle side of young love. And then the chorus roars right back in.
