Behind the Scenes at the Oscars: Photos from Art Streiber

Every year for more than a decade, photographer Art Streiber has documented what goes on behind the scenes at the Academy Awards. He's no stranger to celebrities during the rest of the year: he's photographed Steve Carell for the iconic 40-Year-Old Virgin poster, Justin Beiber for the cover of Vanity Fair, and George Clooney for a spread in Entertainment Weekly. But Streiber loves shooting the Oscars for the opportunity they give to see Hollywood actors and actresses in more candid, less polished moments. As he told The Atlantic in an interview earlier this month:

This isn't the '60s or the '70s when Life magazine and William Claxton could spend a day with Steve McQueen driving up the coast, doing beautiful black and white photography. Those kinds of opportunities don't exist because the celebrities and actors and actresses are very managed and handled and presented. [But at the Oscars,] they're in gowns and jewels, yes, they're in tuxedos, but the moments are all real, they're not manufactured. I like that about this kind of work.

Here, a look at some of Streiber's most memorable images from past Oscars ceremonies:
