Past TracksLove, baby, comes and goes. This Lee Fields has always known.

For anyone feeling jilted, confused, or otherwise romantically off kilter this holiday season, allow Lee Fields to put things in perspective with his harmonious soul stylings and old-school love knowledge.

"Love Comes and Goes" stands out on My World, the 2009 album from Lee Fields & the Expressions that garnered minor attention and landed on a few best-albums-of-the-year lists (though not the big ones). Here, Fields and his band perform it at the Southpaw in Brooklyn in the summer of 2009.

Fields has been around the block a few times, which is probably how he knows about love's coming and going. He began his musical career in the 1960s, putting out "Let's Talk It Over"/"She's a Lovemaker" in 1979 (now considered a vinyl collectible), followed by several albums in the 1990s.

On the 2009 album, he hit a stride: On "My World," Fields channels Percy Sledge and Sam Cooke, taking his voice--a well-worn, James-Brown-esque instrument that's both smooth and rusty--into slow, soul-groove territory. And the Expressions are a solid backing group (see the instrumental "Expressions Theme" for proof).  If you need a reason to buy this music, Fields himself encourages you to do so as a musical stimulus.
