Revisiting the Canon: 'Boomerang'

That said, this P.M Dawn joint was OK. When I was 16. Back then, it was widely thought the a young man must be in possession of the Boomerang soundtrack (which this joint comes from) if he had any hope wooing the honeys. I don't think much of it holds up--not even the mega-hit "End Of The Road," which I loved then. Somewhere there's a really embarrassing karoake tape of me absolutely mauling that joint. Anyway, I think Johnny Gill's "There I Go" holds up. It'd be dope to see him perform it live. Frankly, it'd be dope to see New Edition live, at this point.


To me, Boomerang is the best black romantic comedy ever made, and in my Top Five rom-coms ever. So many rom-coms today are either funny, or romantic--or most often, neither. Boomerang had that balance. Of course it made Halle Berry into a goddess. The summer after, every girl in Baltimore had that hair-cut. And Boomerang had black folks who, like, had nice things and shit. And Trekkies. And Grace Jones. There really isn't much else.
