Publication of The Jungle- detailing the atrocities of the food packing industry and lack of sanitary conditions resulted in many reforms

Upton Sinclar
Food and Sanitation in the Food Industry

Wrote The Jungle, which brought about public attention to the poor working conditions and terrible food standards prevalent in the meatpacking industry. Probably inspired the FDA's creation.

White slavery, wage slavery, today's imbalance between corporate greed and labor, social injustices like affordable medical care, non-living wage, The Jungle is the best history lesson ever. Sinclair raised the issue of what America could be or ought to be. He addressed an enormous variety of social injustices. The society he described is a mirror of today's society: corruption in business, corruption in government, corruption in the judicial system, corruption of a controlled corporate press, exploited immigrants, anti-union, classism, inequality to the destruction of the middle class, hunger (lacking "food security"), purity of our nation's food and medicine, worker safety, economic security, etc. Sinclair's world has come round again in 2006 with a vengeance. Sinclair's lesson: the fight for a just society never ends--the fight against Social Darwinism never ends. Sinclair's writings and political involvements were a force behind Teddy Roosevelt's Pure Food & Drug Act and later legislation passed under Franklin Roosevelt.

Any of hundreds of Native Americans could be brought to the list for their solidarity on behalf of their people.

Fought off an entire army trying to preserve their way of life and almost succeeded.

I'm not a fraction of a percent Native American, but as I scrolled through your list I was shocked to find not a single reference to the people that inhabited this land before the Europeans arrived. The history of America cannot be separated from the history of the Native American, but by excluding them, your list does just that.
