Harper Lee

How could you possibly forget the author of America's greatest novel??!!

Robert E. Lee

Created the country we have now by his post appomattox behavior

Very nearly won Civil War

If Lincoln made #1, Lee belongs in the top ten as Lincoln's foil.

He showed us how to be profoundly wrong and soundly defeated without sacrificing decency or dignity.

The South still believes they will rise again.  Rebel flags are as popular in the South as bagels are in the North.

Led the movement for industrial unions in the 1930's and 1940's, which eventually embraced millions of members and were indispensable to the expansion of America's middle class after World War II

He belongs on this list in Gompers' place. Gompers did not build the labor movement, he shepherded it. Lewis, on the other hand, not only had the vision, but the will to organize the unorganized.

The true inventor of the New Deal!
While Samuel Gompers (61) made the labor movement aware of itself (and Cesar Chavez, mentioned in your article, brought it in line with the young leftist impulse of the 1960s), John L. Lewis really brought the movement to the masses and made it a force that could change the economy, as well as politics. Were it not for Lewis, there would be no New Deal. The cultural waves from the fight to organize workers into the CIO also reverberate through our music, art, and literature.

Unionization of coal miners, improved working conditions

responsible for the first labor-management contracts in the auto and steel  industries.  Pensions, health insurance

Joe Louis

Joe Louis was probably the most important athlete of the last century. When some called Louis "a credit to his race," sportswriter Jimmy Cannon responded, "Yes, Louis is a credit to his race -- the human race. Joe Louis is the greatest heavyweight champion of all time. ..." Joe Louis wasn't only a great African American boxer, he was a great man.

Gave us a new model for our Wild West mythology

Creator of How many American icons?

The Force is with him.  He defined a new generation of heroes and pioneered in the realm of special effects.

He made science fiction in movies a staple of Americana.  I for one could not imagine a world without "Star Wars".  It would be a vast emptiness a great as the cosmos itself.

Changed the way the entire film industry operates: special effects, graphics, sound

Changing the movies industry

Aside from creating "Star Wars," how many ground-breaking effects movies can you think of that had "Industrial Light & Magic" in their credits? A lot.
