In his case, "the greatest" isn't hyperbole. At his prime, Ali was a rare combination of superb athleticism and self-promotion that almost always delivered on his promise. more importantly, he led by example. I can't imagine many among the world's leaders, much less professional athletes, who would be willing to sacrifice their titles, income and liberty rather than compromise their integrity. When Ali refused to submit to the draft and fight in a war he found morally arrestive, he gave up all of these and became immensely unpopular. In doing so, he transcended his sport and became a testament to abiding the courage of one's convictions.
