The March Puzzler

This puzzle's diagram entries have been supplied by a public-radio audience, with predictable results: Of the 40 clue answers, 11 are affected in one way and 15 more in another way. Both ways create new words in the grid. Letters that fall in the shaded squares, read left to right from top to bottom, explain what sort of a puzzle this is. There are two proper nouns among clue answers and two more among diagram entries.

The instructions above are for this month's puzzle only. See a complete introduction to clue-solving.

See the solution to last month's Puzzler.
