A Good Question

A reader writes:

I’m not a Catholic and don’t pretend to know much, if anything, about excommunication.  Nor do I know much about Catholic doctrine having to do with abortion, but it has been my understanding that the Catholic Church views abortion as the taking of an innocent life, the equivalent of murder, if not itself murder.

So, does the Church routinely excommunicate people who commit murder?
