The Catholic Crisis

Ross:

The only good news (for Catholics, but not only for Catholics) is that institutional failure has been a constant in the life of the Church for two thousand years and counting, and Catholicism's capacity for renewal - on a corporal and individual level alike - has endured for two millennia as well, the errors and crimes of its leaders notwithstanding.

Yes, but with all due respect to Ross, this is too easy. The specific authoritarian insularity of the two recent Popes made both the SSPX and the Maciel outreach much worse. Perpetuating anti-Semitism and protecting abuse of children are not ordinary failings. One is a profound sin; the other a major crime. And the clique that has no problem with Maciel or the Lefebvrists is still running the show!
