Ryan Avent furrows his brow:

I’m really not sure we want GM to be making a lot of cars right now. There are tens of thousands of unsold cars piling up around the world. So either we pay GM and Chrysler to employ workers to make cars, which seems like a waste and which could retard recovery by adding to the overhang, or we pay GM and Chrysler to employ workers to not make cars, at which point we have to ask why GM and Chrysler employees are special. There are, after all, plenty of people out there that we could pay to not do something.
