As the robocalls sink in, those parts of the country most susceptible to being scared of "the other" show movement in McCain's direction. What Rove's proteges and McCain are about to unleash will be much worse than anything already done, because the real excrescences come in the last fortnight. I agree, sadly, with Josh Marshall:

Stripped down to its components McCain's message to voters is this: "Don't forget. He's definitely black. And he may be a terrorist."

Don't under-estimate this kind of appeal to the unconscious among older, white voters in some pockets of the country:
