Ben Smith criticizes Gordon Smith for this ad. But Smith has long been a moderate, inclusive, pragmatic Republican. He's been very gay-friendly, and shows how a devout Mormon can nonetheless reach out to people of all faiths and none. He's also helped end the HIV immigration ban. We need more Republicans like him. And although he was an early backer of McCain, he knows where the wind is blowing in Oregon.
